Summary of interview findings

In my interviews, I saw quite a few clear similarities across responses. I found that although students participated in outdoor activities to various degrees, but that most were interested in more accessible information about the opportunities that were available in Harrisonburg. A common response to the question of accessibility of information was that information was moderately accessible, but only if the user was seeking it out.

It also seemed to me that there was a correlation between many users’ access to transportation and their access to outdoor recreational activities. Even upperclassmen who had cars on campus expressed that it could be difficult to figure out transportation to various activities. Many interviewees seemed keen on the idea of exploring with other students, and mentioned that this would allow them to troubleshoot the issue of transportation. This point was repeated when users were asked what might be useful to them in an app, many people mentioning a meet-up or car-pool feature.

Another finding was that users desire more customizable options when seeking information on outdoor activities. They want to see activities that are particularly appealing to them based on their likes and dislikes. Users also desired more detailed information about the opportunities that are available around Harrisonburg. It was clear that knowing things like cost, weather, and open/close times prior to venturing out would improve their experience.
